For lovers of culture and antiquities, a visit to the Castle of Chillon is a must. This imposing 13th Century landmark, perched on a rocky outcrop by the lake, and immortalised by Lord Byron in his epic poem "The Prisoner of Chillon" has been beautifully restored.
Or, stroll the streets of Montreux and be enchanted by the Victorian architecture. Follow the trials of poets and other celebrities and walk in the footsteps of Hemingway, Nabokov or Miles Davis to name just a few.
For train enthusiasts, Montreux offers an intiguing local railway network to explore. Ascend 2'045m by cogwheel train to Rochers-de-Naye for fantastic views or, for scenic grandeur, ride the Panoramic Express through Alpine scenery to the picturesque resort of Gstaad, just 75 minutes away.
If you prefer to admire the mountains rom afar, board one of the traditional Edwardian steamers that ply the lake.
In Summer, plane rides can be organised to enjoy the panoramic views over the mountains from the airbase in Gruyères.
Food and wine lovers will be amply satisfied in this region...you can visit the wine cellars of Lavaux (UNESCO) and sample some of the local wines, or the medieval town of Gruyères, the home of cheese, where we recommend a fondue in one of its charming cafés. Every year in December, Montreux becomes home to Father Christmas with on e of the most beautiful Christmas Market in Europe - over 120 beautifully decorated chalets offering Christmas gifts and ware.
For Music Lovers, the world renowned Montreux Jazz Festival in July, or the Classical Music Festival, September Musical, in September will certainly be a highlight of your visit to Montreux.
Montreux can also help to work off the calories... tennis, cycling, golf and wide choice of hiking trails are all available in Summer...plus boating and sailing, and not forgetting the more adventurous sports like Para-gliding and water-skiing on lake Geneva.
